Frequently asked Steroid Injection Questions
Here I have compiled a list of FAQs that we often get asked prior to booking in for a steroid injection. I hope it helps!
Do I need to get the medication from my GP or have a letter from my GP first?
No. We do not need any documentation from your GP and we source the medication independently through our Non Medical Prescriber. This makes the process much quicker without having to wait for GPs to process prescriptions.
Does the Injection Hurt?
Most people find the injection uncomfortable rather than painful.
Any discomfort is usually short-lived, and careful technique helps minimise pain.
Can I Drive After My Injection?
Yes, you can drive after your injection.
Can My Pain Get Worse Before It Gets Better?
Yes. Some people experience a temporary flare-up of pain in the first 24–72 hours after the injection. This usually settles on its own and is a normal response.
How Long Does It Take for a Steroid Injection to Work?
Some people notice improvement within a few days, while for others it can take 1–2 weeks. The response varies depending on the condition being treated.
How Long Will the Injection Last?
Pain relief can last from weeks to several months. Long-term benefit is more likely when injections are combined with physiotherapy to address the underlying cause.
Do You Inject Into the Bone?
No. Steroid injections are not injected into the bone.
How Many Steroid Injections Can I Have?
To reduce the risk of side effects, steroid injections are usually limited to:
No more than 3 injections in the same area per year
Your clinician will discuss what is appropriate for you.
Can I Have a Steroid Injection If I’m on Blood Thinners?
Yes, but there may be a slightly increased risk of bruising or bleeding. If you are on warfarin, we will need to know and monitor your INR levels.
Can I Have a Steroid Injection If I Have Diabetes?
Yes, but steroid injections can temporarily raise blood sugar levels. Monitoring and careful planning are important, and this will be discussed with you beforehand.
